Picture Page: Broadsheet Picture Editing and Design Assignment

Story by Christine VanDuzen
This assignment we were given text, a whole photograph take and a broadsheet with column guidelines. The story is about a fat camp, Camper Timber Creek, in North Carolina. The campers struggle to lose weight together, play and meet new people. They also experience different social dynamics than those in their schools because they are no longer the only fat kid.
For my photo selection, I wanted to show the life of these campers including the emphasis on weight loss and the interactions of the campers. The main photo shows the group effort as they stretch before exercising. I liked how their faces vary with intensity and focus on the task. The bottom photo shows two campers struggling to complete their 3 mile morning walk. It is a quiet moment, but it shows the challenges that these children face as they try to lose weight and gain a healthy lifestyle.
The three smaller photos show the interactions and personalities of the campers. Kids laugh as they prepare for the talent show, a girl plays with her food at breakfast and a boy bursts into laughter while playing with inner tubes. Camp Timber Creek is not only focused on weight loss, but it is an environment for fun, learning and new friends.
